American blog of Iranian dissent

TOOPacalypse Now

The college and pro basketball seasons are now officially in full swing. And while there's no signs of Iranian-Americans anywhere near a Division I or NBA hardcourt, there are a couple of noteworthy Irooni imports.

Firstly we have a story in the New York Daily News over the weekend about 18-year-old Arsalan Kazemi, who has already committed to play for the Owls of Rice University. While it's not exactly Duke, it is a respectable mid-major program in a mid-major conference. Check out this Sports Illustrated write-up on him.

With Iran's national team playing in the latest Summer Olympics for the first time in its history, Iranian hoopsters are looking for a ticket to the States to take their game to the next level. Case in point: the 7-footer Hamed Haddadi. He impressed scouts at the Olympics, and got signed to be the proverbial '12th man' for the Memphis Grizzlies. So he won't be getting any playingtime anytime soon. But at only 23 years of age he's got plenty of room to grow (non-vertically).

Lets just hope Hamed doesn't grow a scary-ass beard.
