Shirs and Stripes

Last night I took my friends from Chicago out to Shamshiri Grill, a tasty eatery in Vestvood I check into whenever my checkbook allows. Every other joint seems to be out of my price range these days.

The sahaab, Hamid, a bald 180-kilo sized ex-Olympic Freestyle Wrestler, was in the house. He gave us free chais. Topics in our brief convo included how his 28-year-old Korean fiance is a leading sales rep at Google, and the status of his two boys from his first marriage.

Two of his kids are in the military. The U.S. military. Stationed in Hawai'i as midshipmen. When I asked him if that's a good place for a 24-year-old Persian boy, Hamid remarked with the unexpected.

"Nah, not really. I'd prefer him to be in the Air Force."
