Writers on the Desert Storm

The other night I found myself at a party at UCLA, at an apartment in the hills that was like a funky tree-house. The host was a Persian student-stoner who grew up in Utah. His musician brother was in town along with his bandmates from Berlin where he currently rhaps as a bohemian.

The host living there said the place was a former abode of Jim Morrison when the iconic Lizard King was a "pretentious" film student in the late 60s. The other co-founder of the Doors, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, has been recently making a lot of trippy music with Iranian composers and producing cosmo-cultural mashups.

The mercurial drummer of The Doors, the great John Densmore, has also recently been gettin' down - and maybe gettin' high - with Iranian and Middleastern musicians.
